Program 2015

It was Pierre Boulez who founded the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY, this campus for new music that is unique around the world, and in 2015 he will celebrate his 90th birthday. Naturally the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY wants to celebrate its founder and artistic director, for which purpose they have designed a music marathon whose theme is “A Day for Pierre Boulez.” It will comprise both important works by the honoree and musical birthday wishes from numerous well-wishers. Another focus will be the encounter with composer-in-residence Tod Machover. Academy participants will perform his Hyper String Trilogy for computer-assisted instruments and his Symphony for Lucerne, a sonic portrait of the Festival metropolis. And we have yet another exciting premiere in the wings: as part of the inaugural edition of the Roche Young Commissions series, two new orchestral works, one each by Samy Moussa and Piotr Peszat, will be performed. Pierre Boulez helped oversee their creation for a period of two years.

Two outstanding representatives of the young generation will be on hand this summer as conductors: Pablo Heras-Casado and Matthias Pintscher, who will also lead the master class in conducting. With the concert version of Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin and Varèse’s Amériques, Heras-Casado’s “curriculum” encompasses two classics of early modernism. Together with “artiste étoile” Isabelle Faust, the students of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY will prepare Szymanowski’s First Violin Concerto. And of course they will also appear in wide-ranging related programs of chamber music, ensemble pieces, and genre-smashing projects of their own.
